Tall Oaks Summer Enrichment Program

TOCS Students

Welcome!
Tall Oaks Classical School offers four two-week summer sessions for students who wish to:
  • Keep thinking, learning and discovering during the summer months
  • Make a smooth transition into the classical program at Tall Oaks
  • Strengthen academic skills for the upcoming school year or
  • Receive remedial instruction.

Session I: July 5 – 16
First Period: 8:45 – 10:15

Cursive Handwriting - Mrs. Andrea Baines
Grades 1 – 3
We teach cursive handwriting beginning in kindergarten at Tall Oaks, because this developmentally appropriate style of handwriting reduces letter reversals and left-right confusion. Students transitioning into Tall Oaks in grades 1 to 3 will benefit by this introduction to traditional cursive.

Introduction to Latin I  (Grammar Level) - Mr. Nathan Tillman
Grades 4 - 7
Latin instruction begins in third grade at Tall Oaks. This course was designed to introduce Latin to those students who are transitioning into Tall Oaks at fourth through sixth grades who lack a Latin background.

PSAT/SAT Preparation Classes - Mr. Karl Mason
Students will hone the verbal and mathematical skills needed for PSAT and SAT tests. They will also learn test-taking strategies to improve their scores.

 Second Period: 10:30 – 12:00

Spell to Write and Read - Mrs. Dory Zinkand
Grades 2 – 5
This course is an introduction to the phonics program we use at Tall Oaks for spelling and reading. We recommend that students transitioning into Tall Oaks in grades 2 to 5 take this course.

Introductory Logic - Mrs. Christina Schneider     
Grades 8 to Adult
Logic is taught in the 8th grade at Tall Oaks Classical School. This course is an overview of the first semester of our Logic course. We recommend that all students entering Tall Oaks in grades 9 or higher attend this course. This course is also open to parents and teachers who are interested in obtaining a background in logic. Note: Intermediate Logic is offered in Session II.

 Third Period: 12:30 – 2:00

Math Workshops (Part I) - Teaching Team
Grades 2 and up

The students will be grouped by grade levels as they review and reinforce basic math skills up through pre-algebra. Classes will also focus on developing mathematical thinking and problem solving skills. This class will run for two two-week sessions. Students may sign up for one or two sessions. This class is free to students enrolled full time in Tall Oaks for the 2010-2011 school year!

Latin I  (Upper Level) - Mr. Nathan Tillman
Grades 8 to Adult
This course was designed to introduce Latin to those students who are transitioning into Tall Oaks at seventh grade or higher who lack a Latin background. The course is also offered to adults, so parents can help their children with their homework and teachers can better integrate Latin into their other classes. Note: Latin II is offered in Session II.

English as a Second Language (Continues for 4 weeks) - Mr. Karl Mason
To help non-native English speakers to improve the language skills needed for success in school, including reading comprehension, vocabulary, oral communication and writing skills. For intermediate or advanced English speakers.

First Period: 8:45 – 10:15

English Grammar Introduction - Mrs. Sue Vogelmann
Grades 2 – 6
This course is an introduction to the English Grammar program used at Tall Oaks Classical School. This course is provided to teach concepts that are necessary for success in our Language Arts and Latin curricula. Rising second graders need attend only one week of this course.

Introduction to Latin II  (Grammar Level) - Mr. Nathan Tillman
Grades 5 - 7

This course will build on Introduction to Latin I (Grammar Level), offered in Session I, by introducing more noun declensions, verb conjugations and vocabulary. Prerequisite: Introduction to Latin I (Grammar Level).

PSAT/SAT Preparation Classes for ESL Students - Mr. Karl Mason
PSAT and SAT test preparation for students for whom English is a second language.

 Second Period: 10:30 – 12:00

 Basic Writing Mechanics - Mrs. Sue Vogelmann
Grades 2 - 4
Primary students will strengthen basic writing skills, including writing complete sentences and organized paragraphs using proper capitalization and punctuation. We recommend this course to all students entering second through fourth grade at Tall Oaks who have not been taught to write organized paragraphs or any students who wish to strengthen their writing skills.

Intermediate Logic - Mrs. Christina Schneider
Grades 8 to Adult

Registration:

Registration is open to all students of grades K through 12, whether or not they are a student of Tall Oaks Classical School.

Tuition discounts apply to students who are registered as a full time student at Tall Oaks Classical School for the 2010 – 2011 academic year.

The registration deadline is June 1, 2010. Late registrations will be accepted with a $10.00 late fee.

Classes may be cancelled for inadequate registration by June 1, 2010.

Grade designations refer to the grade the student will begin in August, 2010.

Parents who wish to learn along with their children may attend these courses without cost. 

Pricing for two-week courses (Monday through Friday for 90 minutes each day):

  • SAT Preparation for ESL Students: $200 ($150 for students enrolled full time at Tall Oaks for the 2010 – 2011 school year).

  • English as a Second Language (4 weeks): $400 ($350 for students enrolled full time in Tall Oaks for the 2010-2011 school year.)

  • Rising second graders who attend only one week of the English Grammar Introduction pay $100.

  • All other courses are $175. ($125 for students enrolled full time at Tall Oaks for the 2010 – 2011 school year).

  • Payment is due with registration.

  • There will be a $10.00 late fee for registrations received after June 1, 2010.


  • Parents, do you want to learn along with your children?
    At Tall Oaks, our mission is to assist parents in their responsibility to educate their children. When the curriculum we use at Tall Oaks is unfamiliar, we understand that it can be difficult to help your children as they study or do their homework. Therefore, if your Tall Oaks student is enrolled in a summer course, we welcome parents to attend with their children at no additional cost so that you may learn about the methods that will be used in your child’s classroom. 


    Course Descriptions:
    All grade level indications refer to the student’s grade as of the fall of 2010. Exceptions to grade level requirements will be considered upon request.

    Behavior Policy: Students are expected to treat their teachers, their classmates and property with respect and abide by the policies of Tall Oaks Classical School.

    Dress Code: Students may wear modest casual summer attire. No short shorts or tops that cover less than a tee shirt, please.
